Received:October 3, 2005 Accepted:December 20, 2005 ABSTRACT Objective: To elucidate whether and how in patients with uremia on hemodialysis the level of CRP as the marker of inflammation correlate with serum leptin. Patients and Methods: Serum leptin and CRP were determined on patients with ESRD on hemodialysis Results: The total patients were 36 (f =15, m=21). The mean patient's age were 46 (±16) years. The median length of the time patients had received hemodialysis was 19 months. The mean serum CRP was 8.7±6.6 mg/L. The mean serum leptin was 9.4±14 ng/ml. Conclusion: We found a significant inverse correlation of serum leptin with serum CRP (r= -0.57, p = 0.041). Our data supports the hypothesis that in patients on hemodialysis, the association of leptin with CRP levels was inverse which could show the positive effects of leptin on nutrition and support the theory of protective effects (reverse epidemiology) of leptin in hemodialysis patients.(Rawal Med J 2006;31:10-13)

بررسی ارتباط بین سطح سرمی (CRP)C-Reactive Protein با اختلالات خواب در بیماران تحت همودیالیز مزمن

Background & Aim: One the most common problems of patients on maintenance hemodialysis is sleep disorders that depends on comorbidities, age, morning dialysis shift, blood pressure and female gender. In addition, nocturnal and daytime sleep abnormalities are accompanied with cardiovascular and infectious diseases. On the other hand, inflammatory processes play an important role in individua...

Serum C-reactive protein in asthma and its ability in predicting asthma control, a case-control study

Background: Increased serum high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in asthma and its association with disease severity has been investigated in many studies. This study aimed to determine serum hs-CRP status in asthma versus healthy controls and to examine its ability in predicting asthma control. Methods: Serum CRP was measured by ELISA method using a high sensitive CRP kit. Severity...

Association of serum leptin with serum C-reactive protein in hemodialysis patients

Introduction: Recent investigations have shown that leptin is cleared principally by the kidney. Objectives: To examine whether and how in patients on hemodialysis the level of C-reactive protein level correlate with serum leptin. Patients and Methods: The total patients were 36. The mean patients' age were 46 (16) years. The median length of the time patients were on hemodialysis were 19 month...

C-reactive protein and other markers of inflammation in hemodialysis patients

Background: Hemodialysis patients are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. Higher than expected cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this population has been attributed to dislipidemia as well as inflammation. The causes of inflammation in hemodialysis patients are multifactorial. Several markers were used for the detection of inflammatory reaction in patients with chronic renal dise...

Study of Serum Levels of Leptin, C-Reactive Protein and Nutritional Status in Hemodialysis Patients

BACKGROUND Leptin is secreted by adipose tissue and decreases appetite. However, the role of leptin in the pathogenesis of hemodialysis (HD)-related malnutrition has not been fully evaluated. OBJECTIVES The aim of study was to investigate the association between the serum leptin levels, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and nutritional status in hemodialysis patients. PATIENTS AND METH...
